Our History Informs us

When I initially meet with a new client, I go over their history. I actually have a form I send home on our first meeting called the "biopsychosocial form". I explain that this form gives me a general idea of all the areas of life that have impacted them up until this moment. Going over the biopsychosocial form is like sorting out the pieces of the puzzle that contributes to what is going on today. It is through examining these pieces that we can sort out major life events, strengths and weaknesses, patterns of behavior, and relationship issues and where people just get stuck.

One thing that is universal though is the history we all share by virtue of being humans in a broken world.

Our shared history takes us back to the very beginning of time where everything fell apart in the garden of Eden. When we know and understand this history we can better understand ourselves, others and the world we find ourselves in. We are, everyone of us impacted by brokeness, the world we live in is broken, frustrating and sometimes painful, and our relationships will struggle with an element of brokeness. That is the premise for the book I have coming out at the end of the year. By creating this resource, my hope is that we can better understand ourselves and the reasons why things are the way they are. We will understand our own frustrations, disappointments, and struggles. When we acknowledge our ancient past and understand how it has impacted us, we are able to reset our expectations, to transend our view of our life and to see ourselves in a grand story that has been playing out since the beginning of time. Our own biosychosocial histories begin to take on new meanings and we can look forward in hope as we rest in a the promise that everything is being made new, even now, even though we might not see it or understand it. We can be made new, our stories can be made new and we can start to see a new future that is colored by hope.

I'd like to tell you more about this upcoming resource. Please sign up for my monthly newsletter. It's short, informative and will keep you posted on resources to help you KNOW, HEAL and GROW as you travel the metanoia journey and grow relationally, emotionally and spiritually.
